At Thistle Soapery, we celebrate the journey of transforming your hair care routine to one that aligns with nature. One of the most profound shifts you can make is moving from conventional liquid shampoo to handmade solid shampoo. This change isn’t just about adopting a more sustainable lifestyle; it’s also about nurturing your hair with the purest ingredients and experiencing the true benefits of essential oils.

The Journey: Embracing ‘The Purge’

Transitioning from regular shampoo to a handmade solid shampoo often involves what we lovingly call ‘the purge.’ This is a detox phase where your hair adjusts to the absence of synthetic chemicals and silicones that traditional shampoos typically contain. These substances often coat your hair, giving it a false sense of smoothness while masking underlying issues.

During the purge, your hair might feel different, possibly oilier or drier than usual. This is a natural process as your scalp recalibrates its oil production. Patience is key here. Typically, the purge lasts a few weeks, but once your hair adjusts, you’ll notice it becoming healthier, more resilient, and vibrant.

Environmental Benefits: A Greener Choice

One of the most compelling reasons to switch to handmade solid shampoo is its positive impact on the environment. Traditional liquid shampoos are packaged in plastic bottles, contributing to the growing plastic waste problem. In contrast, solid shampoos are often wrapped in minimal, eco-friendly packaging, significantly reducing plastic use.

Moreover, handmade solid shampoos are usually crafted with sustainably sourced ingredients and produced in small batches, minimizing the carbon footprint associated with mass production. By choosing solid shampoo, you’re not only treating your hair better but also making a conscious decision to protect our planet.

The Power of Essential Oils

Essential oils are nature’s gift to our well-being, and when it comes to hair care, their benefits are truly remarkable. Handmade solid shampoos often contain a blend of essential oils that nourish the scalp and hair. Here are some of our favorites:

•Lavender Oil: Known for its soothing properties, lavender oil can help calm an irritated scalp and promote healthy hair growth. Its natural antiseptic properties also make it effective in preventing dandruff.

•Tea Tree Oil: This powerful oil has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, making it an excellent choice for combating scalp issues like dandruff and itchiness. It also helps in maintaining a clean, healthy scalp environment.

•Peppermint Oil: The invigorating sensation of peppermint oil can stimulate blood circulation to the scalp, promoting hair growth. It also has a refreshing scent that leaves your hair smelling delightful.

•Rosemary Oil: Rosemary oil is celebrated for its ability to strengthen hair, prevent hair loss, and improve overall scalp health. It’s a fantastic addition to any hair care regimen for those seeking thicker, fuller hair.

•Lemongrass Oil: Known for its antifungal and antibacterial properties, lemongrass oil helps maintain a healthy scalp and can prevent dandruff. It also adds a fresh, citrusy scent that invigorates the senses.

•Sandalwood Oil: Sandalwood oil is excellent for soothing a dry, itchy scalp and can help add moisture to hair. Its warm, woodsy aroma also provides a calming effect, making your hair care routine a more relaxing experience.

• Sweet Orange Oil: Sweet orange oil brings a zesty, uplifting fragrance and is rich in vitamin C. It helps improve the overall health of your scalp, boosts circulation, and adds a natural shine to your hair.

By switching to a handmade solid shampoo, you’re allowing your hair to reap the full benefits of these potent essential oils. Unlike synthetic fragrances and chemicals, essential oils offer genuine therapeutic effects, enhancing the health and beauty of your hair naturally.

Making the Switch

As you prepare to make the switch to handmade solid shampoo, remember to give yourself and your hair time to adjust. Here are a few tips to ease the transition:

1.Be Patient: Understand that the purge phase is temporary. Stick with the solid shampoo, and you will soon see the benefits.

2.Use a Vinegar Rinse: An apple cider vinegar rinse can help balance your scalp’s pH and remove any residue left by your old shampoo, easing the transition process.

3.Stay Consistent: Regular use of your new solid shampoo will help your scalp adapt faster. Resist the urge to switch back to conventional products during the purge phase.

4.Enjoy the Process: Take this time to appreciate the natural, gentle care you’re giving your hair. Embrace the simplicity and effectiveness of using a product crafted with love and integrity.

Switching to handmade solid shampoo is a commitment to yourself and the environment. At Thistle Soapery, we believe in the power of nature to provide the best care for your hair. Embrace the change, trust the process, and let your hair experience the true benefits of natural ingredients and essential oils. If you’ve ever struggled with sensitive skin, you know

If you’ve ever struggled with sensitive skin, you know how frustrating it can be to find a cleanser that doesn’t leave you feeling irritated and inflamed. I’ve been there too. For years, I tried every shop-bought cleanser under the sun, hoping to find something that wouldn’t make my skin freak out. Unfortunately, most of them only made things worse.

The Struggle with Commercial Products I’d buy these cleansers that claimed to be gentle, only to end up with tight, itchy, and inflamed skin. It seemed like every product out there was loaded with harsh chemicals, artificial fragrances, and preservatives that my skin just couldn’t handle. I felt like I was stuck in a never-ending cycle of irritation and disappointment.

Taking Control: Crafting My Own Soap One day, I decided enough was enough. I took matters into my own hands and decided to make my own facial soap. A few years earlier, I had learned to make basic soap as part of a crafty Christmas present project. Drawing on that experience, I began researching how to upgrade my recipe into a nourishing facial soap. It was a game-changer. Suddenly, I had complete control over every single ingredient, ensuring each one was chosen for a good reason and would be kind to my sensitive skin.

Understandings and Tailoring Ingredients I dove into research about natural ingredients and their benefits. I learned about the soothing and anti-inflammatory properties of tea tree oil, the detoxifying magic of activated charcoal, and the healing wonders of Tamanu oil. By carefully selecting and combining these ingredients, I was able to create a soap that finally worked for my skin.

The Result: A Perfect Soap for Sensitive Skin The first time I used my handmade charcoal and tea tree facial soap, I was blown away. My skin felt clean, calm, and nourished—no irritation in sight. The Tamanu oil provided deep hydration and helped repair my skin’s barrier, while the activated charcoal and tea tree oil kept my skin clear and balanced.

Helping Others: A Shared Solution I started sharing my soap with friends and family, and to my surprise, they loved it too. Some had similar issues with commercial cleansers, and my soap was a breath of fresh air for them. Their feedback was so positive that I decided to expand and create a range of soaps tailored to different skin types and concerns.

A Journey of Discovery and Empowerment
Making my own soap wasn’t just about solving my skin issues; it was about taking control and understanding what goes into my skincare products. This journey allowed me to create a product that was perfect for me and, as it turned out, perfect for many others too.

The Foundation of Our Facial Soaps
Now, all our facial soaps share a luxurious base made from shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, castor oil, and avocado oil. These ingredients ensure a rich, moisturizing lather that’s gentle on your skin. Depending on the specific needs of different skin types, we add other nourishing oils like apricot kernel, hemp seed, and sweet almond oil. We fragrance our soaps with pure essential oils and use natural clays or charcoal for coloring, ensuring our productse are as natural and effective as possible.

Safety and Compliance: Our Commitment to You
To ensure that our soaps are safe and compliant for use on the skin, we have them assessed through the Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR). This process provides an extra layer of reassurance that our products meet all necessary safety standards and regulations.

If you’re tired of commercial products that don’t work for your sensitive skin, I encourage you to try natural, handmade alternatives. Knowing exactly what’s in your skincare can make all the difference, transforming your routine and your skin’s health for the better.

If you're interested in our facial soaps here's our recommendations by skin type:

• 1 tablespoon aloe vera gel
• 1/2 teaspoon allantoin powder
• 3 drops frankincense essential oil
• 3 drops rosehip seed oil
• Water (as needed)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Base: In a small bowl, mix the kaolin clay with enough water to create a smooth paste. If you have oily skin, you can opt for charcoal powder instead, which is excellent for deep cleansing and detoxifying.
2. Add the Hydrators: Incorporate the hyaluronic acid powder into the mixture for its superb hydrating properties. Stir in the glycerine and honey, both of which are fantastic for retaining moisture and soothing the skin.
3. Soothing and Healing: Add the aloe vera gel, known for its soothing and healing effects. Sprinkle in the allantoin powder to help calm and protect the skin.
4. Boost with Essential Oils: Add the frankincense and rosehip seed oils. Frankincense helps rejuvenate and tighten the skin, while rosehip seed oil is packed with vitamins and fatty acids that nourish and improve skin texture.
5. Mix Thoroughly: Blend all the ingredients together until you achieve a smooth, uniform consistency. Adjust the consistency with a few drops of water if needed.
6. Application: Apply the mask evenly to your clean face, avoiding the eye and mouth areas. Leave it on for about 15-20 minutes.
7. Rinse Off: Rinse off the mask with lukewarm water, gently massaging your face in circular motions. Pat your face dry with a clean towel.
8. Follow-Up: Complete your routine with your regular toner, serum, and moisturizer to lock in the benefits.

Ingredient Substitutes and Alternatives

Hyaluronic Acid Powder:
If you don’t have hyaluronic acid powder on hand dont worry the glycerine alone will provide all the moisture your skin needs .

Glycerine:
You can replace glycerine with jojoba oil or sweet almond oil for a boost of hydration and nourishment, especially for dry skin types.

Allantoin Powder:
As an alternative, colloidal oatmeal can be used to soothe and calm the skin, offering similar anti-inflammatory benefits.

Tailoring the Mask to Your Skin Type

• Oily Skin: Use charcoal powder instead of kaolin clay, and add a few drops of tea tree oil to combat acne.
• Dry Skin: Add a teaspoon of plain yogurt to the mix for added hydration and gentle exfoliation.
• Sensitive Skin: Stick with kaolin clay and consider adding chamomile extract or a few drops of chamomile essential oil for extra soothing effects.

Making your own kaolin clay face mask at home is a fun and rewarding way to take control of your skincare routine. By using natural ingredients, you can customize the mask to suit your skin’s unique needs and enjoy a pampering spa experience without leaving your house.

Happy masking!

Thinking about swapping shower gel or liquid soap for

One little bar of handmade soap isn’t going to save the planet single handedly. But swapping bottled shower gel or liquid hand soap for a good old-fashioned bar is one of those ridiculously easy changes that can help cut down on plastic, without making your bathroom routine any more complicated.

For me it all started with a charcoal facial soap that I made to help my super sensitive skin while cutting down on our plastic waste. My OG facial soap is still a best seller today: Charcoal & Tea Tree Soap

No elaborate zero waste lifestyle required. No sacrificing lovely fragrances. And definitely no washing yourself with something that resembles a beige brick. Just really lovely handmade soap. Luckily, we know a thing or two about that. 🧼

Handmade soap vs liquid soap: what’s the difference?

The obvious difference is staring at you from the side of the bath. The bottle. Liquid soaps and shower gels need something to contain them, and that’s very often plastic. Once you’ve worked your way through the product, including the obligatory upside-down bottle balancing act to get the last bit out, you’re left with packaging to dispose of.

A solid soap bar doesn’t need a plastic bottle at all. At Thistle Soapery, our handmade soaps are plastic free, so once you’ve lovingly used your bar down to the tiny sliver you insist you’ll definitely use tomorrow, there’s no empty bottle left behind.

Small change. Big impact.

Switching to bar soap can mean less plastic Bathrooms have a habit of collecting plastic. Shower gel. Hand wash. Shampoo. Conditioner. Another shower gel you bought because it smelled amazing. That bottle of shampoo you tried twice, hated, but somehow can’t bring yourself to throw away…

Choosing plastic-free bar soap instead of bottled liquid soap or shower gel is a simple way to reduce some of that packaging. And you don’t need to throw away everything currently in your bathroom and start again. Please don’t. That would rather defeat the point. Just use what you already have. Then, when the next bottle runs out, consider replacing it with a bar.

One less bottle. Then another. Easy.

Handmade soap can be packed with gorgeous plant-based ingredients More sustainable shouldn’t have to mean more boring. Absolutely not on our watch.

Our vegan handmade soaps are made in small batches using carefully selected plant-based oils and butters, with ingredients such as olive oil, sunflower oil, shea butter, avocado oil and cocoa butter appearing throughout our collection.

And then we get to have some fun. Depending on the bar, you’ll find essential oils, gorgeous fragrances, clays, botanicals, charcoal, turmeric and plenty of colour too. Some are fresh and citrusy. Some are earthy and botanical. Some are even a little bit ridiculous. All are rich and luxurious.

Handmade soap naturally contains glycerine

Here’s a tiny bit of soap science. Don’t worry there won’t be a test afterwards. Traditional soap is created through a process called saponification, where oils react with an alkali and are transformed into soap. During that process, glycerine is naturally produced and remains in our finished handmade bars. Glycerine is a humectant, meaning it attracts moisture, and is one of the things that contributes to the lovely feel of traditionally made soap.

Our handmade soaps are vegan and cruelty free

Every Thistle Soapery soap is vegan and cruelty free. It’s not something we think should require a huge fanfare. It’s simply how we’ve chosen to make our products. We use plant-based oils and butters rather than animal fats, and our finished soaps are made without animal-derived ingredients. And absolutely no need to test soap on a bunny. Bunnies have better things to do. 🐰

We’re palm oil free too

You won’t find palm oil hiding in our soaps either. Its production has been linked to deforestation and habitat loss, so we decided we’d rather formulate without it. Instead, we use a carefully selected blend of plant-based oils and butters to make really lovely soap. No palm oil required. For us, it’s about making thoughtful choices about the ingredients we use, the way we make our products and the packaging they leave behind.

Bar soap can last for ages

The secret to making handmade soap last longer is wonderfully uncomplicated: let it dry between uses. A draining soap dish or sisal soap pouch can help keep your bar out of standing water and allow it to dry properly before its next outing.

You don’t have to choose between sustainability and lovely things

This might actually be our favourite reason to switch from shower gel to handmade soap. Making a more sustainable choice doesn’t have to feel like a sacrifice. Your soap can still smell incredible. It can still produce gorgeous bubbles. It can contain lovely plant-based ingredients. It can look beautiful sitting in your bathroom. It can even be bright pink, covered in swirls or smell good enough that you have to remind somebody in your household not to eat it. And it can do all of that without needing a plastic bottle.

Is handmade soap better than liquid soap?

In my opinion YES! There isn’t one product that’s going to be perfect for absolutely everyone. But if you’re looking for an easy way to reduce plastic packaging in your bathroom, a solid handmade soap bar makes a pretty convincing case for itself. There’s no plastic bottle, our bars are vegan and cruelty free, they’re made without palm oil and there’s a huge variety of fragrances and ingredients to choose from.

Is bar soap more environmentally friendly than shower gel? Packaging is one of the clearest differences between a solid soap bar and bottled shower gel. Choosing a plastic-free soap bar removes the need for a disposable bottle each time you replace your soap. Of course, sustainability is much bigger than one bathroom product, and we’re never going to pretend buying a soap bar suddenly makes anyone an environmental superhero. But reducing unnecessary packaging where we can? That seems like a pretty sensible place to start.

Ready to swap the bottle for a bar?

We’re not here to tell you to completely overhaul your bathroom. Start with one thing. When your shower gel runs out, try replacing it with a handmade soap bar. When the hand wash does that sad little pfffft noise and finally gives up, pop a bar beside the sink instead. That’s it. One less bottle. We even have our own range of shampoos if you fancy moving over to solid shampoo

Small change. Big impact.
